The Public Fire Protection department serves as the primary liaison to fire and public policy organizations. One or more members of the department serve as representatives for the NFSA to the Congressional Fire Services Institute, National Advisory Council, Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition Steering Committee, Home Safety Council, Board of Trustees of the Phoenix Society, and the Fire & Life Safety Section Board of the International Association of Fire Chiefs. Outreach efforts to the U.S. Fire Administration, Campus Fire Safety groups, Common Voices Coalition, National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, NFPA, and ICC are also coordinated by Public Fire Protection.

 Resources that are targeted for local community leaders who are working to adopt codes and/or legislation that includes fire sprinklers are a priority for Public Fire Protection. Serving as the liaison that provides the necessary educational resources including public hearing testimony, educational training sessions that are target specific to fire and policy leaders, and participation in the Fire Team USA national workshop series are all part of the duties of Public Fire Protection.

 The Association has expanded this department in recent years due to locally driven requests that have been realized due to recent code changes and increased adoption activity across the nation. The Director is joined by an Associate Director and Special Advisor, with additional positions planned in the future, including an Retrofit Specialist and Residential Fire Sprinkler Specialist
