Terry began his fire service career in Lewistown, Montana, as a part-paid firefighter in 1978. In 1979 he was hired on as a career firefighter, holding the positions of Department Mechanic, Training Officer and Chief. He retired as Chief in 1994. Terry worked as a Field Representative for the Insurance Services Office, Inc. (ISO) in Montana for a year, prior to being appointed Deputy State Fire Marshal for the State of Montana in 1995. In 1998, Terry was appointed as the State Fire Marshal for Montana, a position he held until 2003, when he became the Deputy Director of the Wyoming Department of Fire Prevention and Electrical Safety.
In addition, Terry has served on the International Code Development Committee, on the National Association of State Fire Marshals (NASFM) Board of Directors, on the Montana State Emergency Response Commission, on the Montana State Building Code Committee, and the Montana State Attorney General’s Fire Prevention Advisory Council.
