HOUSTON, TX MANDATES HIGH-RISE RETROFIT
On November 22, 2005 the City of Houston, our nation's third largest city by
population, adopted an ordinance to require existing high-rise buildings to
be equipped with an automatic sprinkler system within 12 years. The new law
will be applicable to some 220 plus high-rise buildings and a $200 million
new market. NFSA worked diligently to support the Houston Fire Department

LAKE JACKSON, TX FIRE MARSHALS OFFICE AWARDED FP&S GRANT
On February 2, 2006 the Lake Jackson Fire Marshals Office in Lake Jackson,
Texas was awarded an Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program’s Fire
Prevention and Safety Grant (FP&S) valued at $65,000. The purpose of these
grants is to enhance the safety of the public and firefighters with respect
to fire and fire-related hazards. The primary goal of the program is to
reach high-risk target groups in order to mitigate the high incidences of
death and injuries. Lake Jackson Fire Marshal Randy Crim asked NFSA Regional
Manager Robert Trotter to assist in developing a comprehensive educational
program for the protection of life and property from fire and other
emergencies. One significant component of the multifaceted program is to
build a fire sprinkler demonstration trailer for the purpose of educating
the public, homebuilders, homebuyers, elected officials and other
stakeholders the effectiveness of fire sprinklers. The Fire Sprinkler
Demonstration Trailer modeled after the NFSA New Jersey Chapter trailer is
expected to be the most comprehensive fire sprinkler educational tool in the
region when completed. For additional information or to contribute to the
project please contact Fire Marshal Randy Crim at (979) 415-2726.
