Underwriters Laboratories statement,
dated November 3, 2000
"In response to requests by manufacturers, changes have recently been made to the minimum published water flow rates for a limited number of UL Listed residential sprinklers. These changes were prompted by revisions to the UL Follow-Up Service surveillance program for UL Listed residential sprinklers that became effective on October 31, 2000.
"With these revisions, there are currently no
UL Listed residential sprinklers with a published minimum flow rate less than a
value corresponding to a discharge density of 0.04 gpm/sq. ft. The current Manufacturers' Installation
Instructions reference the revised flow rates.
For some of these sprinklers, the previously published minimum flow
rates were less than 0.04 gpm/sq. ft.
While the number of residential sprinklers involved in the increase in
rated flows is limited, some sprinkler installations currently in progress may
have been designed to use residential sprinkler flow rates based on the
previously published flow rate values. For
sprinkler installations currently in progress only, the use of the rated
flows that were published prior to October 31, 2000 is considered consistent
with the UL Listing of the sprinkler."
