To the Editor:

Another unspeakable fire tragedy has taken seven lives in a Brooklyn apartment building fire (front page, June 24). All new residential buildings must be protected with fire sprinkler systems. This law passed under the Giuliani administration. It came as a result of two tragic fires in December 1998.

What about existing residential structures? Shouldn't they be offered the same protection?

The City Council and the mayor's office must convene a fire sprinkler task force before more lives are lost.
