September 20, 2011 - Seismic Protection 101 Basic Victoria B. Valentine, P.E. Since 2000, seismic protection has become more prevalent. Although there are scenarios where the details of earthquake protection can get complex, some basic knowledge of the subject can carry the user quite far. This seminar will discuss when the building codes require seismic protection to be applied to sprinkler systems as well as the basic concepts and components used to protect the sprinkler system from the earthquake forces it could encounter. |

October 4, 2011 - "UFC versus NFPA 25" Basic Bernie Arends The Federal government has adopted a program for all of its Department of Defense property facilities called the Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC). The objective of the UFC is to streamline the military criteria system by eliminating duplication of information, increasing reliance on private-sector standards, and creating a more efficient development and publishing process. However, some contractors who are responsible for Fire and Life Safety system service and inspections are finding a lack of consistency with industry best practices and the inspection, testing and maintenance requirements found in NFPA 25. The discussion will focus on how to resolve these issues and address the contractor's concerns. |
October 18, 2011 - Pedestal Buildings Intermediate Jeff Hugo, CBO Pedestal buildings are quite popular, as they allow the architect, city planner and the authority having jurisdiction safe, functional structures that can contain multiple purposes and mix types of construction utilizing less expensive building materials. The building codes have criteria for horizontal building separation, or more commonly referred to as a pedestal or platform structure. This program will cover how this relates to the fire sprinkler contractor and what fire sprinkler standard applies to the portions of the building structure. |

November 1, 2011 - "UFC versus NFPA 13" Basic Kevin J. Kelly, P.E. The Federal government has adopted a program for all of its Department of Defense property facilities called the Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC). The objective of the UFC is to streamline the military criteria system by eliminating duplication of information, increasing reliance on private-sector standards, and creating a more efficient development and publishing process. However, some contractors who are responsible for layout and detailing of sprinkler systems are finding a lack of consistency with industry best practices and the installation requirements found in NFPA 13. The discussion will focus on how to resolve these issues and address the contractor's concerns. |
November 15, 2011 - Following Hydraulic Calculations Step by Step Basic James D. Lake To many people in the fire sprinkler industry, hydraulic calculations are those mysterious numbers spit out by a computer. But the knowledge of how the computer conducts its calculations is critical to making good decisions regarding the layout of the fire sprinkler system. Understanding how the water flows through the system and the variables that are critical to system efficiency can save a contractor serious amounts of money and provide better fire protection systems. This presentation will follow the hydraulic calculation of a typical fire sprinkler system to demonstrate the simple step-by-step procedure that mirrors how the computer would calculate the same system. |

November 29, 2011 - Rubber Tire Storage Intermediate/Advanced Karl Wiegand, E.I.T. Protection of rubber tire storage is a difficult task. On top of being made out of plastic, rubber tires inherently present a difficult fire hazard because of their shape. Even in the most tightly laced arrangement rubber tires have large air pockets to feed a fire. Their shape creates a lot of shielding issues, preventing water spray from reaching the fire. This seminar will discuss the special protection arrangements employed by NFPA 13 to protect rubber tire storage. |
December 13, 2011 - Types of Pipe Basic Russell P. Fleming, P.E. This seminar will provide an update on the types of pipe allowed for use in fire sprinkler systems under the various NFPA sprinkler installation standards and different occupancy hazard classifications. It will include a review of the joining methods permitted for the various types. It will also address the limitations of special listed piping products, such protection requirements versus when piping can be exposed, and discuss current compatibility concerns. |
